Local is the new black in travel search

tnooz

Friday, May 4th, 2012

Meanwhile the leading player in Asia, Wego, has gone through a metamorphosis of late. I managed to catch up with its ex-CEO, now non-executive chairman Martin Symes in Dubai during Arabian Travel Market.

“Larry Page”-like Ross Veitch has now re-assumed the top slot. With a new investor on board (Tiger) and a new office in Jakarta opening, the company seems to be going through a growth phase but with a twist. It is taking its brand of local metasearch out for a global spin.

What’s so special about the “new Wego”? It has taken a page out of the Skyscanner playbook and is targeting new country markets by offering local content in a new setting.

With many new languages now on offer, Wego is bringing the fight back to the Scottish contingent. Coincidently, Skyscanner put down a footprint in Singapore at the end of 2011.

Wego is putting in some significant work in the areas of social media and mobile. While its existing development team will stay in Singapore, Wego will move its social and mobile development to its new address in Jakarta in the very near future.

Singapore-headquartered travel metasearch site Wego.com is foraying into India. The company has set up an office in Bangalore with 10 employees and plans to launch wego.co.in, the India version of the site, by the end of this month.

Wego is tying up with all major travel portals in India to enable metasearch. Metasearch engine is a search tool which combines results from several search engines, giving a more comprehensive result to a query. Wego.co.in would collate the results of other portals or search engines like MakeMyTrip.com, Yatra.com, and Via.com.

Web In Travel

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

The internet entered our life in a suit; complete with a tie, top hat and waistcoat, and appearing as though it would be very comfortable on Wall Street.

Some might say that the travel industry had a very similar appearance for many years, but now the two worlds have collided online and the picture is very different.

During a recent press briefing, Hills said Wego had seen an increase of 188 percent in the number of Indonesian visitors to the site, a strong indication that Wego’s Indonesian platform, which is in Bahasa Indonesia, has been a hit.

Clicks for domestic flights increased by more than 400 percent, he said, with most travelers going for low-cost airlines such as Lion Air and Batavia Air. Traffic for international flights also increased by 180 percent with Valuair and Jetstar the most popular airlines.

Malaysia’s own Wego

Wego.com.my is touted to provide travellers with the ultimate search experience as it employs metasearch technology which gives users an effective platform to compare over 150 travel sites, 350,000 hotels and over 500 airlines.

With this metasearch facility, travellers can actually check multi-search sites for flights and hotels in a single search.

To illustrate, if you enter “Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok”, you can compare all flight options including the low cost carriers, or if you are looking for hotels you can choose from the inventory of the major online travel agents, hotel chains and independent properties. By using Wego for comparison shopping, you can enjoy substantial savings both on the rates and fares.

Currently, the site is in English, Chinese and Bahasa Malaysia and in the future, Tamil will be on the cards,  says Wego chief product officer Ross Veitch.

“We want to offer a better way to shop online by helping travellers save time and money to come up with their vacation deals,” he explains.

Windows on the World

Asiatatler

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

I hadn’t even heard of it until recently, but I am now a convert to WeGo, which is a Singapore-based travel search engine that scours travel providers’ sites for the best deals, and recently launched 34 new country-specific sites in 20 languages as part of a global expansion. It is not full of advice from dubious sources, and it uses its data to improve the product. You can search for hotels and filter by which ones are popular for people of your nationality, for instance, and the results actually differ. All I need to do is figure which nationality best fits my profile. I’m off to Google that now.
