There is however a great food market just up the road which is walking distance where you can get some great, authentic malay food for not a lot of money - and which tasted so much better than the chinese restaurant in the hotel.

The convenience store was reasonably priced and they sold snacks, drinks, pastries etc.

The Sunday market was interesting for half an hour but more for locals to buy fruit and veg and pets rather than local crafts for tourists.

Things we did; - the Chinese Market in the centre of Kota Kinabalu on Sunday morning which was very interesting and not too many tourists(but not for you if you're into animal rights as a lot of animals in small cages).

The hotel is about a ten minute taxi from the town centre, which has excellent shopping and quite a few decent restaurants in a central, safe, location.
