    Access is reasonable - 2 stops from JR Kyoto on Karasuma Metro Line to Shijo from - then a decent walk on foot - look out for escalators in the stations to minimise the number of steps hauling luggage.

    The location of Watazen was fantastic, it was within walking distance to Gion and Ponto-cho, Takashiyama, Daimaru and many cool, little shops.

    Besides the difficulty in locating it, Watazen is a great place to stay and is within walking distance to many of Kyoto's sights.

    True, the room was a bit rundown and a bit musty-smelling, but for my boys, it was an unforgettable experience coming 'home' to our ryokan after an entire day spent exploring Kyoto's historical sites.

    We spent three nights in Kyoto in August and it was very hard to find a central accomodation for 4 people, so we finally got 1 night at Matsui Hotel booked through the site japaneseguesthouses.com
