    But I actually preferred Nara to Kyoto in the sense of feeling an intimate sense of "old Japan" and the old attractions not being overwhelmed by the modern sprawl.

    Close to the temple and about an 800 Yen cab ride to the main shopping area (check out the fabulous array of intimate upmarket restaurants, which run down the small streets parallel to the river) Would certainly stay here again if in Kyoto.
